Multi-Section Organic Boxwood Structure with Integrated Wall

Outcome

About the project

This project involved the design and fabrication of a modular, multi-section boxwood structure with an integrated wall. The goal was to create a lightweight yet thickened form that balanced rigidity, visual clarity, and an organic aesthetic. The structure needed to feel sculptural and natural while maintaining a sense of order and modularity. Designed for adaptable use in stage environments or experiential installations, the piece had to be scalable, repeatable, and easy to assemble.

Client Needs

A structure that reads as thick and sculptural without being heavy Integration of an organic form language within a modular, geometric layout Use of natural materials (like boxwood) that enhance tactile and visual interest A fabrication approach that allows for quick on-site assembly and breakdown A solution that’s adaptable to multiple environments and configurations

Solution

To achieve both visual mass and organic softness, the build incorporated 4-inch flexible hosing, stapled strategically to define the thickened structural profile of the walls and box sections. Organic Volume with Modular Control: The structure was broken into modular segments, but the hosing allowed for continuous, rounded edges that softened transitions and gave the piece a more natural flow. 4-Inch Hosing as Formwork: The hosing was stapled in layers along internal frames, forming a bulbous, padded-like perimeter that gave the illusion of carved thickness while staying lightweight and material-efficient. Boxwood Finish: Real or simulated boxwood cladding was applied to the exterior surfaces, enhancing the natural, handcrafted aesthetic while tying the geometry back to organic textures. Quick Assembly: Framing and hose structure were designed to be flat-packed and reassembled using simple alignment tools and fasteners, making it ideal for event-based or touring applications. Flexible Integration: Openings and modular breaks were designed to allow for lighting, content, or AV components to be easily embedded without disrupting the overall aesthetic.
